Artemisia Gentileschi was the most celebrated female painter of the 17th century, yet her name was all but lost for centuries. She painted women from history, myth, and religion as the protagonists of their stories. Her work is bold in every way. Gentileschi's impressive accomplishments reveal her to be a woman ahead of her time. Despite her immense success, Gentileschi faced profound hardships and unimaginable grief in her personal life. Attacked at seventeen, she endured public shaming and torture to prove the truth of the attack. Gentileschi, however, never stops fighting—for herself, her art, and the freedom to live her life on her terms.
