AUDITIONS for Imposter! Hypocrite! TARTUFFE! | May 19 & 20

Updated: May 7

Join us for auditions for the World Premiere of

Imposter! Hypocrite! TARTUFFE!

Based on the Play by That One Guy

Written + Directed by Ashley H. White+

Wit, cunning, and hypocrisy are on full display in this punk-rock remake of Moliere’s classic farce, penned by Ashley H. White.

Get ready for a swift, unapologetic whirlwind that reintroduces the timeless tale of a man who deploys his charm and feigned piety in an attempt to disrupt a household. However, his clever scheme is no match for the astute women of the family who decide to beat him at his own game. Tartuffe may believe himself to be a master of deception, but he’s seriously underestimated his targets (or perhaps, overestimated his own abilities).

With a compact cast, contemporary language, and nonstop bits, Imposter! Hypocrite! TARTUFFE! delves deep into the realms of human desires and power dynamics, offering a fresh, biting take on the classic French comedy.

CHARACTER ROLES

SEEKING THE FOLLOWING

A NOTE FOR ACTORS:  While not entirely a play within a play, the story should be told by a troupe of players – all of whom engage with the audience while not in scenes. All roles will require high energy and physical comedy. There should be many throwbacks to 17th century theatre-going, including ooohs, ahhhhs, flirting, snacks? Drinks? An immersion into a former type of storytelling, if you will. All roles will include some level of audience interaction.

Auditions will contain an improvised element, as well as sides from the script.

Sides will be posted on May 8th.

PLEASE NOTE: As this is a World Premiere, Sides, Characters, And Descriptions are all very, very subject to changed.

*contains adult language and situations*

SEEKING | CHARACTERS

Dorine (Who also serves as the primary Narrator): 30s-60s+ Ferociously witty with a no bullshit attitude, she tells the story while being in the story, and she has strong opinions of everyone throughout. Significant audience interaction

Damis: Mid-twenties-ish: Young, naive, and very self-focused, Mariane’s Brother - he begs often and finds himself at the risk of losing his betrothed (Who’s great, but wants you to talk more about him)

Mariane: Mid-twenties-ish - The daughter of Elmire and Orgon, she is at risk of losing her future husband as her father may or may not be promising her to Tartuffe! Of note; she has a long, long monologue.

Cleante: Late Forties+ - Elmire’s Brother. A voice of reason, with lots and lots and lots of reasoning, Cleante often tries to prove others wrong

Elmire: Late Forties+ - The woman of the house, Elmire is fed up with everyone’s bewitching at the hand of one Tartuffe. She is a master schemer and will go to great lengths to reveal his hypocrisy.

Orgon (Who also plays Ms. P in Drag): Man, Late Forties+ - The man of the household, who is completely infatuated with Tartuffe, Orgon has lost almost all reason in his obsession with the imposter. Also plays Ms P, his Mother, who is equally reverent to Tartuffe

Tartuffe (Who also plays Flipote in Drag): Man, Thirties - The imposter himself. Seen as charming, handsome, incredibly selfless, charming, and nearly virginal in his earthly pursuits, he is actually anything but that. A highly physically comedic role, Tartuffe works to charm every audience member all the while being outsmarted by his stage partners. Significant audience interaction.
